Supporting Data-Driven Grid Planning and Investments

This RMI resource provides a framework for utilities, regulators, and policymakers to make proactive grid investments that support vehicle electrification. It accompanies RMI’s GridUp tool, which forecasts when and where energy and power demands from EV charging will materialize at the census-block level. The roadmap addresses a critical barrier to fleet electrification: the mismatch between rapid EV deployment timelines (months) and grid upgrade timelines (years). By providing granular, data-driven insights on anticipated charging loads, stakeholders can justify infrastructure investments and ensure grid readiness before vehicles arrive.
