This report addresses electric grid stress and fleet operator costs associated with commercial electric vehicle fleets by presenting a flexible smart charging algorithm for depot-based fleets. The algorithm considers multiple fleet operator preferences including cost minimization and carbon-free energy usage, while accounting for grid impacts and handling energy demand infeasibility issues characteristic of fleet charging. The research demonstrates superior performance compared to conventional rapid charging and standard smart charging solutions. The study is particularly relevant for transit and heavy-duty freight vehicle fleets that operate on scheduled routes and return to central depots for charging. Findings show significant potential for reducing both operational costs and grid impact through optimized charging strategies.
