An evaluation of the state of high-power charging (HPC) systems for heavy-duty EV freight, focusing on chargers capable of adding ~100 miles of range per 10 minutes. Building on industry interviews (with EVSE manufacturers) from 2023, this June 2024 update identifies gaps and R&D needs to advance megawatt-level truck charging [etruc.org]. It highlights necessary improvements in charger hardware and software (including standards for integrating on-site energy storage and solar) to reliably support Megawatt Charging System (MCS) deployment [etruc.org]. The report also features economic analysis of using distributed energy resources (e.g. on-site battery storage, solar PV) and smart charge management to reduce costs for fleet charging at depots [etruc.org]. Additionally, it surveys emerging regional charging networks for heavy-duty BEVs and evolving business models (such as new financing approaches for public charging hubs) that can facilitate cost-effective infrastructure rollouts [etruc.org].
