The NorCAL ZERO project represents the largest commercial deployment of Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks in North America, featuring 30 Hyundai XCIENT fuel cell electric trucks operating in Northern California. This groundbreaking $53 million collaborative effort demonstrates the commercial viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty freight transportation. The project encompasses comprehensive infrastructure development including the world’s largest hydrogen fueling station with capacity to support 200 trucks and back-to-back refueling. The trucks operate with a proven range exceeding 400 miles, enabling multiple duty cycles from Oakland to Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, and Fresno on a single hydrogen fill. The project is projected to avoid 24,362 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions over six years of operation.
